I was really looking forward to meeting Karen, but the first thing is that Amber waltzes into the diner and crushes the fantasy.
Dean is still building the bike, but because Amber made it clear that his wife, Karen, will not attend the party and can not be part of Jai’s life, he feels pretty down.
But Willow, there’s the voice of reason to hand out the praise. You’re great, “Willow tells Dean,” Jai is fortunate to have you.
They set off for the party and not only is it an extremely windy day in Summer Bay, but they’re also are no kids attending, and most of the guests only recently acquired by Jai are adults, so his past birthdays must have been much bleaker than this.
But Jai doesn’t care, and with his bike, he’s literally stoked. And then a woman turns up, and I instantly think that Karen is a surprise. But it’s another mum, the mom of Amber.
She’s not happy to see Dean and needs to have this “charade over and over with” and we now know why she’s the way Amber is.
Willow stands up again for Dean and Amber’s mother, who hasn’t been given a name yet because she’s so bad she doesn’t deserve one, gets stuck straight into Dean.
To be fair, Dean was in the car accident that killed the unnamed woman and the little brother of Amber, also by the name of Jai, which comes in a few times, of course, the scriptwriters.
The non-Karen even hate Willow, the’ Dean Thompson fan club chief.’ Finally, when John comes over to get a stickybeak, she introduces herself.
Her name is Francesca and she stresses that “Franny” is the name she hates.
By asking “is Karen coming?” Ohn sticks his foot in it a little. And then he presumably dies, since he is exiled by Francesca.
For others, this dynamic persists until Dean feels it’s a clever move to stand up for himself and threatens his mother.
“Hey Franny, there’s going to be trouble the next time you have a go at me in front of my son,” Dean says.
For more birthday treats, and still no kids in sight, they go to the diner.
As the party wraps up, for a chat about the grandparent situation, Dean takes Amber aside and she unleashes at him.
I hope she’ll scream out “Karen can’t meet Jai because he’s not your son” in the heat of the moment, but I’m disappointed again.
Nevertheless, Amber blurts out that Karen is a’ psycho.’
